Parque De Las Cavernas (Camuy Caves)

Matt had been working a lot lately so we decided to take a mid week break and go camping. In the books Al and Dina left us I found some caves that looked pretty interesting to check out and they had a campsite. After calling every number I could find for them trying to get a hold of someone to ask if the dogs were ok for camping with no success (surprise, surprise) we decided to head out.

It was about an hour and a half drive west into the mountains before we reached the park entrance. There was a big hold up with police vehicles preventing us from getting in the park. Finally the line started moving and we were able to ask about the dogs. The guy at the front was great he said sure they're no problem just don't tell anyone!

I dropped Matt off at the administration to get the camping situated while I kept the girls quiet. We followed a guy to the campsite where there were no other campers, yay! We set up camp and walked up to the ticket booth where we were greeted by a huge line of motorcyclist. They must have been what all the police fuss was about. They're leather vests said some sort of American Motorcyclist Group. The ticket line couldn't have moved any slower and when we heard some in line tell someone else that this huge group was going to take up the tours for the rest of the day we decided to bag it and go exploring.

A lady that worked at the park told us to go South to Lares and get some ice cream at Heladeria Lares where they make all sorts of ice cream including maiz (corn) which is what I had. We walked around the town while it poured rain on us. They have a tone of shops that have knock off items and tight bedazzled t-shirts. It didn't take us long to finish Lares so we then decided to drive North to the coast and see a little of Arecibo.

Arecibo has a light house and a park dedicated to small replicas of Christopher Columbus' ships. It just closed as we got there so we let the dogs stretch their legs on the beach. I thumbed through our guide book and it said to go East on the road we where on for 7km and we would see some hand painted signs where we could park to take a tour of some petrified sand dunes that looked something like what you would see on the moon. It was getting late so we drove to the signs and back to camp where we made instant mashed potatoes and hot chocolate for dinner.
